Awning Mount Options for Your Home

The versatility of mounts for awnings will increase the opportunities you will have to install retractable outdoor awnings and drop shades on your home.

Roof-Mount Awning installation

Roof mounting provides the awning height you may need for adequate headroom under your retractable awning. This type of mount requires that fasteners be installed through the roof into the roof trusses; sounds difficult but it is usually easy. The only caution is use a proper sealer with the fasteners. Follow the instructions concerning sealers in the installation instructions.

Standard Wall Mount is by far the most popular retractable awning installation.

Wall-mount awning installations are the easiest and will be your first choice. As you consider a retractable awning, the first question is... Do I have a wall space to mount my awning?

The second question is... Can I mount the awning high enough so when fully extended, I have adequate headroom under the awning's front bar? The rule of thumb is 1” of drop for each foot of extension. i.e., if you have a 10’ extension, you should allow for a minimum of a 10” drop. Assuming you want 7’ of height at the front bar when fully extended, you should mount the awning frame at least 94” high.

A typical wall-mount installation. The bracket has a simple V-shaped slot that cradles the proprietary frame. Nothing could simpler. Mount the brackets pick the awning up and set it onto the cradle. Then you can take your time to make any lateral adjustments you may need and secure the frame to the brackets. Notice the gear and crank handle at the end of the awning.

Rafter-Mount Awning Installation

The rafter is suitable when you have exposed rafters in the soffit overhang. The open soffit with exposed rafters offers a simple fastening opportunity that is strong and takes full advantage of the height available. If your retractable awning will be installed under a soffit you will save some money as you won’t need a hood.

Soffit/Ceiling-Mount Installation

Soffit/Ceiling mounts are used when a flat overhang exists where the awning can be mounted. This style mount allows the awning to be mounted as near the forward edge of the soffit taking full advantage of the awning's extension for maximum shade.
