An Awning to Cover You from Dawn to Dusk

by karen on July 28, 2011

Ahhh…the shade of an awning in the middle of the day feels great, but when the sun starts to set, where can you hide from the blinding rays? Traditional awnings offer shady relief from the heat and harmful UV rays of the midday sun, but depending on your location, that may not be enough.

Hell-o Shade!

If your porch or lanai faces to the East or West, there’s nothing better than enjoying the morning sunrise with a cup of coffee (ditto for winding down at sunset with a glass of wine). Unfortunately, most awnings fall short when the sun is no longer high in the sky. Living on the West Coast of Florida, I’ve seen a lot of creative attempts at blocking the setting sun, from bed sheets to carefully placed house plants, but none really do the trick.

But squint no more! Introducing the East/West retractable awning – the perfect solution. The East/West protects when the sun is overhead like a traditional awning, with the added benefit of an angled section that gives you shade when the sun is lower in the sky. At last, relief from the full-sun-in-the-face assault of a sunrise or sunset!

If you have a porch that faces east or west, what’s the most creative solution you’ve found to block the sun?
